I don't think Tania is being ironic... I'm pretty sure she's trying to speak for girls in general, which kinda upsets me because it generalized attraction far too much.

I haven't talked to Tim about this specific issue, but I think the issue in general that COMS isn't recognized for their specific fields is known. I think it all comes down to the name... not everyone really knows what Communication Studies entails.

Ha ha I will def do un-academic things during the break -you too, I hope??!
And Iike cheesy, need it at this time of the year...

What is brilliant abt the SS film is how original ideas - cultural considerations and the LOCAL were integrated to create entertaining and relevant content. I thought the film was amazingly poignant and powerful

Funny post - what are siblings to do now that their romantic intrigues can be safe from the prying ears of their bratty bro or sis? Guess they have to sleep with their mobile to avoid its being jacked, or having their bill scrutinized...and yes, has this changed romancing? Looking at early social discourse of the telephone at the turn of (last) century, frankly, things are kind of the same...

Hello I am a scholar who has written about young women's perceptions about FB and I confess that I don't use it. Does that mean I'm a bit of a fraud? I've thought about why I would use FB and the positive uses of it for me - but what bogs me down is thinking of the time investment in maintaining it, or the social guilt perhaps in not responding to people, or gosh, maybe people will realize that in many ways I'm socially quite ambivalent - introverted perhaps...so I wonder how much this is generational, and I wonder why no scholar that I know has looked at the use of SNS by ... older folks. And whether that sense of the gaze (and yes I agree it is both male and female gaze) ... is as prevalent or diff between older users...

You're the first student to mention narcissism in SNS esp related to photos. Interesting. Voyeurism as well, but certainly the former.. like your description of the self portrait show from above, tends to disguise funny necks too. What other iconic images/self portraits are there? Def. the link to the Paris Pose is connected to the sense of narcissism. Celebrity culture etc etc, oh big sigh, it can be so boring. Why this obsession? Why certain celebrities? (yes it is big business now, a veritable celebrity media industry). Are there gendered differences in the SNS poses? Could we think of a Facebook Gaze?

Re race and internet - Lisa Nakamura's work is great. She looks at how racial identities are created online, how racial identities are falsely constructed and how the creation/demonization of the 'other' by (non racialized peoples) can lead to mistrust, arrogance, supremacy etc. To grow up black in conservative London Ont...wow ... where across the border not too far away is a history of an African American community now almost decimated by poverty (Detroit - long history there). All to say - we aren't looking too much at race and identity online in this class - if you want to head in that direction let me know....

Break down what we mean by cool. There are many distinctions. Cool can be in the eye of the beholder. Cool can even be the most un-cool thing ever. Cool can be ironic. Cool can be exploitive. Cool can be trendy. Can cool be cool if an adult says it is so? That can kill the cool. Are kids that are into selling cool via viral marketing...really cool? Is there a price tag on cool?

And is cool just for youth? Boomers are really into cool.
